Kōwhai Consulting are a team of ten employees based at Hamilton, Ngaruawahia and Huntly.

TANIA SIMPSON

Tania Simpson(Tainui, Ngai Tahu, Ngā Puhi) (Master Matauranga Maori, Te Wananga o Raukawa) 

Tania Simpson is the founding director of Kōwhai Consulting and has won a range of business awards. Tania is a trained negotiator and practiced facilitator with over 20 years experience in Māori development including business, education, land development, environment and Treaty issues. She is a Director of Reserve Bank of NZ, Director of AgResearch, Director of Tainui Group Holdings (TGH), Director of Global Women NZ, a member of the Waitangi Tribunal and an accredited fellow of the Institute of Directors.  She is also a past Deputy Chair of Landcare Research NZ.

Tania has a strong background in Māori policy development within central government having worked at senior levels for Te Puni Kōkiri, Office of Treaty Settlements and Housing Corporation New Zealand.  She has vast experience in leading and guiding Maori organisations on a development pathway.

PIKI KNAP 

Piki Knap(Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāi Te Rangi) (Bachelor of Management Studies, Waikato)

Piki is the Acting Chief Executive and has a long history in the field of tourism. She is the manager of the Tui Trust, a non-profit organisation that provides assistance to children and also supports environmental, cultural and educational initiatives. Piki’s background is also in marketing and administration.

MELITA WHAIAPU

Melita is the Executive Administration Officer and has worked with Kowhai Consulting for over 14 Years. She has experience working in Education Management, Human Resource Management, Finance and a long history in administration. Melita has a certificate in Office Administration from Manukau Institute of Technology and is the founding partner of the office administration business; Mobile Business Group. 

 

PARETAKAKA JEFFERIES

Paretakaka has over 30 years teaching experience. She is a registered primary school teacher and her previous roles include Scale A teacher, Senior Teacher, Resource Teacher Māori, Team Leader, relief teacher and SPELD Tutor.

She has worked in mainstream, bilingual, immersion, catholic, and iwi schools. Paretakaka has a friendly, non-threatening demeanour and outgoing nature.

She is a fluent speaker of Māori and along with her knowledge of cultural nuances she has good insight into the best approaches for engaging with whānau. Her skill sets are well matched for the Huntly West community where the majority of Moko Club families are of Māori descent. Paretakaka is passionate about encouraging children to feel excited about exploring, playing and learning. Her strength is in fostering positive relationships with whānau, teachers, fellow staff and community.

 

MICHELLE PAEKAU

MICHELLE PAEKAU(Ngāti Māhanga, Waikato) (Diploma Māori Counselling, Wintec)

Michelle has recently worked with Family Works Northern supporting families to identify concerns affecting the family, assisting the family with goal setting and achievement. Michelle also co-facilitated the Incredible Years Parenting Programme. Michelle also has experience as a student counsellor for Whai Marama Youth Connex and facilitator with Anglican Action.

Michelle brings both her counselling and communication skills to the fieldworker role for the Engaing Priority Families Initiative and is enthusiastic about promoting the opportunities to encourage and support whānau to embrace the benefits of ECE for their tamariki.
